Eulogy for a giant

It’s often said that we stand on the shoulders of giants. Yunupingu was a giant who made sure we could.

He lifted us up and held us there so that we could see as far as he did.

And what a vision he shared with us.

A vision underpinned by an unbending belief in the need for Aboriginal people to hold their future in their own hands.

A vision so grounded in all that was just and fair and right that, ultimately, it elevated us all.

Strengthening cooperation with the G7

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will travel to Hiroshima, Japan from 19-21 May to attend the G7 Summit.

The G7 brings together the world’s largest advanced-economy liberal democracies, including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.

At a time of unprecedented global challenges, joining the Hiroshima G7 Summit as an outreach partner is an important opportunity to advance Australia’s interests, and those of our region.

KATIE WOOLF, HOST: Good morning to you, Prime Minister.

ANTHONY ALBANESE, PRIME MINISTER: Good morning, Katie. It's good to be back in Darwin and it was a magnificent memorial for a great Australian and a great Indigenous leader in Yunupingu yesterday afternoon. I regard it as an incredible honour to have been there.

WOOLF: Prime Minister, Yunupingu was remembered fondly for his ability to walk in two worlds as well as his advocacy for Indigenous people. How would you like Australians to remember Yunupingu?

Australia stands with Ukraine and the G7 against Russia’s invasion

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong today announced financial sanctions and an export ban, targeting sectors of economic and strategic significance to Russia.

These additional targeted measures aim to slow Russia’s war machine.

Australia’s action is part of a push by international partners, who are meeting at the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Hiroshima this week.

Australia has already sanctioned more than 1,000 individuals and entities who are supporting Russia’s illegal and immoral invasion of Ukraine.

ANTHONY ALBANESE, PRIME MINISTER: It is good to be back in Japan for my third visit as Prime Minister. And I thank Prime Minister Kishida very much for the invitation to attend the G7 as one of the associated countries who are here over the next three days. My first visit is here to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. It was important that I visit to pay my respects. August 6, 1945 is a day in which over 200,000 people lost their lives just on that day.
